Laughter, excitement and pure entertainment filled the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center as scores of loyal Kapuso fans trooped to GMA Pinoy TV’s successful sold-out concert, “Kapusong Pinoy sa L.A.” last September 27.

Featuring one of the hottest love teams on television – Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez, the show was an exciting Kapuso experience from beginning to end as the audience was treated to exhilarating performances and entertaining segments from their favorite GMA stars.

Carla and Tom, who were first paired in the internationally-acclaimed series My Husband’s Lover, exuded undeniable chemistry as they serenaded the crowd. Attesting to the popularity of their onscreen pairing currently seen in the romantic-drama My Destiny, their fans eagerly cheered on the pair all throughout their production number. They did not disappoint their fans as they performed thrilling duets and engaged in endearing banter.

“We had a great time performing in L.A.,” says Carla. “The crowd was very appreciative and it was nice to be able to put up a good show and bring a piece of ‘home’ to our fellow Filipinos in the US.”

It was also a homecoming of sorts for Tom as he was reunited with his family who came all the way from Arizona to support the Kapuso leading man. “Performing in this show was heartwarming for me because, not only was I able to share the experience with our kababayans abroad, I was also able to share it with my family,” he expresses.

Tom also gave the crowd a preview of his newest game show on GMA, Don’t Lose The Money, in a segment where two couples were called to participate in the game.

Carla and Tom were also joined on stage by some of GMA’s most versatile performers.

Actor-comedian Betong Sumaya portrayed his popular character Antonietta from the country’s longest running comedy show Bubble Gang. Betong elicited endless laughter from the audience with his comedic segment. Like Tom, Betong was also able to meet with family members whom he had not seen in a long time.

Nakakataba ng puso ang mainit na pagtanggap sa amin dito sa L.A. [We are happy with the warm reception we received here in L.A.],” says Betong. “Unang pagkakataon kong makarating sa Amerika kaya hinalikan ko talaga ang lupa pagdating ko ng airport. Masaya rin kasi after the longest time, nagkita-kita kami ng mga kamag-anak namin sa L.A. so parang reunion na rin. [It was my first time to visit America so I really kissed the ground upon arriving at the airport. I’m also happy because, after the longest time, I was reunited with my family here in L.A.]”

The crowd was also amazed with Asia’s Pop Sweetheart Julie Anne San Jose’s powerful vocals which were showcased in her lively song and dance numbers. Julie Anne has been one of the most requested performers in GMA’s international shows.

“The energy of the crowd was contagious,” declares the Kapuso singing sensation and Sunday All Stars mainstay. “It was definitely a lot of fun performing for the Filipino community in L.A.”

Meanwhile, fast-rising teen star Miguel Tanfelix, who starred in GMA’s top-rating primetime series Niño, also impressed the crowd with his dancing skills. In his first visit to the United States, Miguel was overwhelmed with the support from their fans abroad. “It was my first time to be part of a GMA Pinoy TV event,” said the Kapuso teen artist. “It was a great experience and I look forward to entertaining more Kapuso fans abroad in the future.”

The show culminated in a meet and greet with the Kapuso stars that had fans lining up for hours just to meet and take photos with their favorite artists. Following the hugely successful event, more Kapuso fans in different parts of the world have expressed their desire to see the GMA’s artists perform in their own countries.

“I die without seeing dawn’s light shining on my country… You, who will see it, welcome it for me… Don’t forget those who fell during the nighttime.”
― Jose Rizal, Noli Me Tangere

He is widely regarded as the country’s most beloved hero. This Monday, get to know the man behind the hero as GMA News and Public Affairs brings to life the untold stories of Jose Rizal with the world premiere of the first-ever Bayaniseryeon primetime television, ILUSTRADO.

Ilustrado offers an educational and entertaining viewing experience as it features the life of Rizal as a young student in the Philippines to his travels in Europe as well as the major events and influences that shaped his mind and actions as a reformist. Through his letters to his family and friends, Ilustrado depicts Rizal’s struggles while living abroad. And through his love letters, the series tries to illustrate his relationship with women and why he is considered a notorious lover boy.

Produced by the same creative team behind the highly-acclaimed historical drama Katipunan and mini-series Bayan Ko, Ilustrado boasts of an ensemble of topnotch artists led by award-winning actor and Kapuso homegrown star Alden Richards as Jose Rizal.

Joining him are Kylie Padilla as Leonor Rivera, who many historians believe was Rizal’s true love, and Solenn Heussaff as Nellie Boustead, the French woman Rizal almost married.

Portraying the role of Rizal’s beloved parents are this year’s Cinemalaya best actress Eula Valdez (Teodora Alonzo) and Ricardo Cepeda (Francisco Mercado). Freddie Webb gives life to Rizal’s uncle, Don Jose Alberto, while Rizal’s brother Paciano Mercado is played by Marco Alcaraz. Child star Jhiz Deocareza plays the young Rizal.

Also incorporated in the Bayaniserye are fictional characters representing some of Rizal’s antagonists – mother and son Conchita and Venchito Monteverde (played by five-time Urian best actress Jaclyn Jose and Polo Ravales, respectively); Padre Amado (Lito Legaspi); and young Venchito (Sean Ross).

The cast also includes Max Collins as Consuela Ortiga, JC Tiuseco as Antonio Luna, Lucho Ayala as Jose Alejandrino, Bryan Benedict as Juan Luna, Jak Roberto as Maximo Viola, and Rhen Escano as Isidra Monteverde.

Under the direction of King Marc Baco, Ilustrado is filmed using the sophisticated Arri Alexa camera, along with equally high-end lenses provided by CMB Film Services Inc.  GMA Post Production, using up-to-date 3D visual effects technology, has recreated the grandeur of the European cities where Rizal lived and completed his novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

The series’ theme song is composed and performed by Gloc9 featuring Lirah Bermudez with additional arrangement by Simon Tan.

Ilustrado, the first Bayaniserye on Philippine primetime, airs beginning Monday, October 20, 9:30pm right after Hiram na Alaala.

It will also air simultaneously on GMA Pinoy TV.  To learn more about Ilustrado’s airing schedule, visit GMA International’s website, www.gmanetwork.com/international, Facebook page, www.facebook.com/GMAPinoyTV, and follow GMA Pinoy TV on Twitter and Instagram via @gmapinoytv.

Front Row won Grand Prize at the UNICEF Asia Pacific Child Rights Award for Television for its documentary Ulilang Lubos

One of GMA Network’s award-winning documentary programs, Front Row is this year’s winner of the prestigious UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for Television.

Its winning documentary, “Ulilang Lubos” (Orphaned) follows the daily life of 10-year-old Princess, who has had to take care of three younger siblings since their mother abandoned them. Princess washes produce at a wet market to earn money. She receives five to 20 pesos for this.

After working the entire morning, Princess then proceeds to her second job: scavenging. She has to do this every day to feed herself and her siblings.

“I haven’t seen my mom since she left us three years ago,” Princess says. “We started scavenging to get some money and asking around for food. Sometimes we don’t have anything to eat and our stomachs hurt. We sleep on cardboard boxes on the floor. I envy my friends because they go to school but I don’t.”

“Front Row: Ulilang Lubos” was praised by the jurors for reflecting the vulnerable children’s world in their own eyes. “It was very effective,” they said. “There are many heartbreaking moments in this film. The interviews were handled with sensitivity and the three children came across as everyday kids. Their interaction during bath and meal times was very naturalistic, as if the cameras weren’t there. This is a powerful story that really captured the plight of these children.”

The UNICEF further says, “Front Row: Orphaned is a powerful piece of television. It shows the importance of protecting and nurturing children, and the strength and resilience they possess, through the eyes of four abandoned children trying desperately to make the most of their lives,” said Christopher de Bono, Chief of Communications, UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific.

“It is also a testimony to the value of powerful television storytelling, by motivating all of us to meet our responsibilities and address the suffering of children in need.”   Dr Javad Mottaghi, ABU Secretary-General, said: “To know there are documentary makers of this quality working in our region, chronicling the lives of our most vulnerable children and celebrating the triumph of their young spirits over great adversity, must spur us all on to be the best media messengers we possibly can.

‘Front Row: Orphaned’ shows how great documentary-making not only exposes inequality and exploitation but journeys deeper into the human spirit and reminds us that each human being, however young, poor and disadvantaged, carries the light of hope in their soul.” Christopher Slaughter, CEO of CASBAA, said: “CASBAA congratulates GMA Network for their unflinching look at childhood poverty in ‘Front Row: Orphaned’. Our industry reaches hundreds of millions of people around the world daily. It is heartening to see our medium being used as a platform not just for entertainment, but in the service of such a worthy cause as alleviating the plight of children in need.”

Managing Producer Joseph Israel Laban accepted the prestigious UNICEF prize last October 27 at the Asia Broadcasting Union awards ceremony held in Macau. He shared the viewers’ positive response to the program. “Since the documentary aired, one of the children’s relatives has reached out to them. Viewers are now sending two of the children to school and more help is still coming in. But we are hoping for a more permanent and comprehensive solution to address the plight of Filipino orphans, perhaps with better Government facilities to take care of them and their basic needs.”

The UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award was established by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), CASBAA and UNICEF in 2001. It recognizes the efforts of broadcasters and producers in pursuing high quality children’s television and better coverage of children’s issues, and is given each year to the best programme on children’s rights produced in the Asia-Pacific region.

Front Row’s “Ulilang Lubos” also previously won a Silver Screen Award at the 2014 United States International Film and Video Festival and received a Finalist citation at the 2014 URTI Grand Prix for Author’s Documentary in Monaco, the sole Philippine program to be honoured this year.

Kapuso viewers abroad can catch the multi-awarded documentary program Front Row on GMA News TV International, which is available to subscribers in the Asia Pacific, Middle East, North Africa, and Canada.

GMA Network will have viewers swooning as the newest light-hearted drama series More Than Wordsbegins this November 17 on its flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV

More Than Words stars Janine Gutierrez and Elmo Magalona, the widely embraced Kapuso love team that will once again captivate audiences, following their pairing in the hit remake of Villa Quintana.

Showing Janine Gutierrez in a new light is her portrayal of Ikay, a girl taunted as a weirdo at school because of her unique looks and constant daydreaming.  She finds solace in writing fiction online, creating the character of Katy Perez in her work entitled Diary of a Queen Bee.

Unlike Ikay, Katy is a cool, popular girl adored at St. Martin’s University. In her story, she creates her dream boy, Hiro.

The next morning, Ikay is surprised when she sees a boy washed ashore. It turns out he is exactly the guy she pictured in her blog entry. Breathing life to the character of Hiro is Elmo Magalona.

Hiro finds himself in an unfamiliar place after figuring in an accident the night he rebelled against his widowed mom. He loses his memory, starts a new life with the help of Ikay, and eventually falls for her.

Set to make More Than Words all the more exciting is the ensemble cast led by Ms. Jaclyn Jose as Precy, the quirky and eccentric mother of Ikay; Gardo Versoza as Victor, the ambitious stepfather of Hiro; Yayo Aguila as Marissa, the widowed mother of Hiro; Enzo Pineda as Nate, campus heartthrob and star player of the varsity soccer team; Stephanie Sol as Belle, the queen bee of Southville Academy, girlfriend of Nate and Ikay’s biggest bully; Mikoy Morales as Chester, the son of Victor and stepbrother of Hiro;Mayton Eugenio as Chelsea and Coleen Perez as Molly, the classy conspirators of Belle against Ikay.

Giving shelter to Hiro are Emil and Rose, respectively portrayed by the widely-popular 80s love team of Rey PJ Abellana and Leni Santos. Emil and Rose’s relationship turned sour after their only child died many years ago. With the arrival of Hiro, they will find their way back to each other. Taking care of Hiro, the son they wished they had, will serve to mend their rocky relationship.

Under the helm of esteemed director Andoy Ranay, don’t miss the blossoming romance in More Than Words, this November 4 on GMA Pinoy TV.

Maralag at the GMA Network Q3 Performance Briefing on November 14 at the GMA Network headquarters in Quezon City

(Quezon City, Philippines – November 14, 2014) – Leading broadcast company GMA Network (GMA) reported a net income of P422 million in Q3 2014, up 66% versus the previous quarter.

Consolidated revenues for Q3 2014 stood at P3.141 billion, representing an 8% improvement over the P2.915 billion generated in Q2. Both airtime revenues and gross earnings from other businesses posted positive results and contributed to the increase in the topline.

Ratings leader GMA Channel 7 grew its sales by 7%, while GMA News TV, the country’s number one news channel, hiked up its earnings by 12%. GMA Radio likewise registered a 15% increase in sales on account of its stronger listenership.

Meanwhile, revenues from other businesses led by GMA International, the business unit that manages the operations and distribution of the Network’s three international channels, rose 12% compared to Q2 2014.

Total operating expenses slightly increased by 2% to P2.590 billion, as both production cost and General Administrative Expenses (GAEX) climbed 2% and 1%, respectively, in between quarters. Personnel cost was higher mostly from salary adjustments and the amortization of signing and appreciation bonuses in September as part of the Network’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Network ended the third quarter with an EBITDA (Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) of P972 million, surpassing the previous quarter’s figure by 31%.

“The third quarter was a promising period for GMA with both our revenues and ratings on the uptrend. We are hoping to sustain this performance until the end of the year as we remain committed to offering superior programs across all genres and platforms,” said GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon.

Business Developments

GMA International recorded higher subscriber figures in Q3 2014 compared to the previous quarter as it continues to reach out to more Filipino households abroad. Subscribers for GMA’s international channels GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International grew by 2%, 1% and 8%, respectively.

GMA Worldwide, a wholly owned subsidiary that acquires foreign programs for GMA and syndicates Kapuso programs to the international market, sold 718 worth of program hours from 17 titles in the third quarter for telecast in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Cambodia and Nigeria.

GMA New Media, Inc. (NMI) substantially grew its revenues from online advertising by 10% quarter-on-quarter as readership and audience reach of the GMA Network Portal (www.GMANetwork.com) soared in the covered period.

GMA News Online, the official news website of GMA News and Public Affairs, performed exceptionally well in the third quarter as it showed a significant increase in both pageviews and unique browsers, according to data from Effective Measure. The website surpassed the 86.4 million total pageviews generated in Q2 as figures jumped to 153.1 million in Q3. Monthly average unique browsers also increased from 5.6 million to 11.6 million in between quarters. The growth can be attributed in large part to better, more aggressive social media initiatives, which ultimately boosted sales from online advertising.

Furthermore, Digify, a subsidiary of NMI, remained at the forefront of new media initiatives as it engineered groundbreaking techno-based solutions for major brands, with some even gaining recognition from local and international award-giving bodies.

GMA artist Julie Anne San Jose’s album, Deeper, under GMA Records, debut strongly with over 11,000 digital and physical units sold (according to sales from June 1, 2014 to September 20, 2014), earning it a Gold Record Award.

On the regional front, the Network continued to improve and expand its regional coverage with several transmitter upgrades. The signal outcome of the completed restoration and upgrade of the TV relay facilities of TV-8 Coron, which was damaged by Supertyphoon Yolanda in November last year, showed remarkable increases from the signal levels recorded in 2010. Its estimated coverage grew by 45% brought about by the increase in transmitter power (from 100W to 500W) and the installation of a new antenna system.

The site relocation of TV-11 Iligan in September 2014 not only expanded the station’s coverage in the provinces of Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental, but also resulted in improved signal strength and quality and more importantly enabled the carriage of the Northern Mindanao programs originating from GMA Cagayan de Oro.

Ratings

The third quarter saw GMA grabbing the nationwide lead in TV ratings from its closest competitor, according to data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

During the covered period, GMA registered a 34.2% total day household audience share in NUTAM, higher than ABS-CBN’s 34.1% and TV5’s 9.9%.

GMA also kept its lead in its stronghold areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, where it was ahead of competition by substantial margins. Urban Luzon and Mega Manila account for 77% and 60%, respectively, of the total urban TV households in the entire country.

In Urban Luzon, GMA scored 37.8% in total day household audience shares versus ABS-CBN’s 30% and TV5’s 9.2%; while in Mega Manila, GMA posted 38.8%, ahead of ABS-CBN’s 27.7% and TV5’s 9.8%.

Meanwhile, GMA’s flagship AM station DZBB became number one in Mega Manila based on Nielsen data from June to September, driven by its aggressive programming efforts.

Beyond the numbers, GMA continued to reap awards and recognition from prominent local and international institutions as a testament to its unwavering commitment to merit and excellence.

GMA News TV’s “MAY PAG-ASA” campaign is a collection of stories of hope aimed to show the power of the human heart to see light in the midst of darkness.

It does this by revealing the little known tragedies and challenges behind the success of GMA News TV’s personalities.  In this station and social media campaign, they share their personal struggles (#maypinagdadaanan) and how these became their source of hope (#maypagasa).  They also share life stories of a few of their news and documentary subjects so that others can draw inspiration from them.

For seven years, Vicky Morales prayed to have a child. She tried everything -from medical intervention to dancing in Obando. Despite the long wait, she never lost hope. Vicky is now blessed with not just one, but three lovely children.

Jay Taruc was devastated when he learned that his only daughter Sophie has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Sophie cannot walk and may be taken from their family at any time. Jay now spends every possible moment with his daughter.

Cesar Apolinario used to sell cigarettes on the street while Susan Enriquez had to work in a carinderia.  Their earnings helped put them through school.  Now the two are award-winning journalists.

Solenn Heussaff was bullied at a young age for being overweight.  She taught herself to be strong and eat healthy and transformed into an icon of fashion and beauty.

Mel Tiangco suffered from a heart attack while Winnie Monsod experienced a stroke while on the air.  Surviving these life threatening conditions pushed them to pursue their advocacies with even more passion.

Mike Enriquez has been married 37 years to his wife Baby. Early in their marriage, the two realized a baby was not in their destiny. Instead of focusing on what they lacked, they decided to work on maintaining a blissful marriage.

Beyond the experiences of its hosts, the channel honors the unwavering spirit of the Filipino and their indomitable courage to stand up and move forward through this campaign.

GMA News TV believes that we are all have our own story of hope. And as we help one another rise up, we help our nation rewrite its future.

The heartwarming MAY PAG-ASA campaign airs worldwide via GMA News TV International.

“Ano ang Kwento ng Pag-asa Mo?” is the campaign’s theme song performed by Johnoy Danao and co-written by Johnoy with GMA News TV program manager Nena Celle Dumol and executive producer Joni Mosatalla.  The song was composed and arranged by Ronald Tomas.

The GMA News TV station ID was shot by director Adolf Alix Jr. and filmed using ARRI Amira cameras provided by CMB Film Services Inc., with the drone shots captured by anchor/reporter Raffy Tima.

Kapuso stars Bianca Umali, Miguel Tanfelix, Kris Bernal, Barbie Forteza, Marian Rivera, Dingdong Dantes and Julie Anne San Jose joined GMAKF EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco in giving the residents an early Christmas gift.

A year after Yolanda hit the Philippines, the survivors’ stories of resilience continue as they rebuild from the ruins of their storm-ravaged homes.

Since the typhoon’s landfall in 2013, GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) – with its long-standing commitment to Serbisyong Totoo – has been a steadfast advocate in turning these stories of loss into stories of hope through its quick response in times of need and its extensive disaster relief programs.

On the anniversary of Yolanda, GMAKF officially turned over 120 permanent concrete houses of Phase II and III of its Kapuso Village in Tacloban City to select families displaced by the super typhoon.

GMAKF is the first NGO to turn over permanent concrete housing to Yolanda survivors in Tacloban City.

A total of 172 houses were turned over since July 2014. An additional 231 houses will be ready for occupancy in the coming months, fulfilling in part the Foundations’ 403-unit concrete housing project in the area.

“For the Yolanda survivors, a year definitely will not suffice to alleviate the pain from the loss of family members and ruined homes. However, our commitment in rebuilding lives through this long term project will help regain the hope of many displaced residents,” shares GMAKF EVP and COO Mel C. Tiangco.

The beneficiaries were emotional during the turnover as they recalled the height of the storm and what they went through. Even so, they were grateful for the outpouring of assistance they received from GMAKF and its partners.

Through the generosity of numerous citizens all over the world, the project was able to come to fruition. Furthermore, GMA Network and its roster of stars showed the true meaning of the Kapuso spirit by participating in GMAKF’s Yolanda rehabilitation efforts.

Just this month, GMA launched its 2014 “Share the Love” Christmas campaign reminding its viewers that rebuilding lives entails a collaborative effort from generous hearts and passionate spirits.

GMA unveiled the campaign with an event plug featuring Mel Tiangco joined by Kapuso stars as they shared an early Christmas with the residents of the Kapuso Village in Tacloban.

The plug garnered positive reviews on Facebook with users commenting on the wonderful message of the campaign and GMAKF’s tireless efforts in helping those in need. Facebook user Gerolou says, “That’s why kind-hearted people trusted GMA Kapuso Foundation because they can see where their donations go… hope to fulfill 400 or more houses for Yolanda victims onward!”

Meanwhile, Facebook user Khryss, a Yolanda survivor, praises the video saying, “It makes my heart smile upon seeing this video and the song has really moved me. Thanks for motivating a lot of people in doing humanitarian missions. We are still blessed to have people like you.”

Since its launch, over 100 Kapuso celebrities and News and Public Affairs personalities have shared the love by sponsoring food, toys, medical treatments and medicines for the Kapuso Foundation’s beneficiaries in the country, including other Yolanda-affected areas.

In addition to the housing project in Tacloban, GMAKF also pledged the construction of 24 new classrooms under its Kapuso School Development project within the Kapuso Village. Meanwhile, another Kapuso Village will soon rise in Palo, which includes 169 concrete houses and 10 classrooms.

GMAKF has also turned over 15 classrooms in Barangay Sulangan, Guiuan, Eastern Samar. Moreover, construction and rehabilitation is underway for 40 classrooms in Quinapondan, Eastern Samar and in Villaba and Kananga in Leyte.

Going beyond immediate disaster relief efforts, GMAKF is committed to utilizing its resources to create a lasting impact on the lives of their beneficiaries.

Urban Luzon and Mega Manila account for 77 and 60 percent, respectively, of all urban TV households in the entire country.

Moreover, the airing of the Pacquiao-Algieri fight on GMA7 became the highest rating show (including specials) in NUTAM, Urban Luzon, Mega Manila and Urban Visayas, leading all other programs in these areas.

From November 1 to 30 (with the dates of November 23 to 30 based on overnight data), GMA recorded a 36.8 percent total day household audience share in Urban Luzon, surpassing ABS-CBN’s 31.1 percent by 5.7 points and TV5’s 8.8 percent by 28 points.

Leading across all areas in Mega Manila, GMA posted a 37.8 percent total day audience share in the area, up 9.3 points from ABS-CBN’s 28.5 percent, and up 28.5 points from TV5’s 9.3 percent.

Compared to its key competitor, GMA had more entries in the list of top-rated shows in Mega Manila with 18 out of 30.

GMA’s lead in November was also driven by the ratings performance of its weekly anthology Magpakailanman, multi-awarded news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, reality sitcom Pepito Manaloto, GMA Telebabad’s Strawberry Lane, afternoon drama The Half Sisters, flagship newscast 24 Oras, weekend programs Celebrity Bluff, Marian, Ismol  Family and recently launched primetime soap, More Than Words.

In NUTAM, GMA more than doubled its afternoon block lead over its closest rival, ABS-CBN, to 7.6 points from its 3-point lead in October. In November, GMA scored 37.8 percent, higher than ABS-CBN’s 30.2 percent.

GMA subscribes to the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement service, while ABS-CBN is the lone local major TV network that subscribes to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

Nielsen data is gathered through a greater number of sampled homes nationwide in comparison to Kantar Media.

GMA’s top-rating programs can be seen worldwide on GMA’s flagship international channel, GMA Pinoy TV. For more information on GMA Pinoy TV as well as other GMA International channels, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International, visit www.gmanetwork.com/international.

Gozon, Enriquez: Driving forces behind GMA Network’s success

Cementing their status as pillars of excellence in the local broadcast industry, GMA Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon and veteran broadcast journalist Mike C. Enriquez were recently recognized by BizNewsAsia (BNA), the Philippines’ largest business and news magazine, during its 13th anniversary celebration on November 25.

Hailed as “The Best Broadcast CEO” by the weekly magazine, Gozon received the Entrepreneurship Excellence Award, while Enriquez was the lone awardee for Broadcast Excellence.

BizNewsAsia’s Best Broadcast CEO

BNA cited Gozon’s “hard work, diligence, dedication, scholarship, expertise, innovation, and family values” as factors that led to his indisputable success as a media mogul. “His values as a God-fearing family man, his training as a lawyer, and his experience as a broadcast CEO have enabled him to pursue truth with passion, fairness with conviction, and excellence with vision,” said BNA.

In 2011, BNA named Gozon Tycoon of the Decade – a feat that puts a spotlight on his remarkable leadership, first as President and later as Chairman and CEO of GMA Network. Gozon was also listed consistently among BNA’s Power 100 from 2003 to 2010, and was bestowed the Visionary Management Award last year.

A distinguished lawyer prior to entering the broadcast business, Gozon, who earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the Philippines and his Master of Laws degree from Yale University, told BNA that he found the broadcast industry more challenging than law practice.

“Everyday is a different day when you’re in this business. You cannot be certain that what appeals to viewers today, would still appeal to them tomorrow. And this is what makes our jobs very challenging yet fulfilling at the same time,” related Gozon.

Dynamic as the industry is, his passion for excellence is what motivates Gozon to keep GMA at the top of its game. He has brought “tremendous creativity, management excellence, growth, profitability and credibility to GMA Network,” said BNA.

Besides bringing in an estimated P20 billion in cumulative net profits, Gozon also laid out the framework that gave rise to the fulfilment of his vision to put GMA Network at the forefront of the broadcast field in the country.

“I am deeply grateful for this award, as well as for the continued recognition of my accomplishments as a CEO by BizNewsAsia,” said Gozon. “I share this honour with our Kapuso viewers here and abroad, who are part of my and GMA Network’s success.”

Maintaining Excellence in Broadcast

Mike Enriquez is – without question – one of the most credible, most respected and most admired broadcasters on TV and radio today. And his award from BizNewsAsia – with the multi-awarded GMA News and Public Affairs figure being its only recipient – is a testament to this.

Over the years, Enriquez has kept his fearlessness uncompromised, his credibility unblemished, and his values intact.

“He is the best broadcaster in the Philippines today,” said BNA of Enriquez, whose day-to-day duties with GMA include co-anchoring GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras together with fellow GMA News and Public Affairs Pillars Mel Tiangco and Vicky Morales, hosting the weekly investigative show Imbestigador, running the Network’s Radio business as its Consultant for Operations, and delivering hard-hitting news on DZBB, GMA’s flagship AM station.

From working without pay to joining a strike and being awakened by soldiers at their picket line in the wee hours of the first day of Martial Law, Enriquez, as BNA puts it, “He has seen and done it all.”

So when the time came for GMA to appoint someone who will lead the expansion of its Radio division in 1995, he was the best choice for the role.

Fast forward to today, GMA Radio continues to make significant contributions to the Network’s earnings, while promoting its thrust of providing Serbisyong Totoo. This year, DZBB reached a significant milestone when it became the number one AM station in Mega Manila – with Enriquez crediting his team’s hard work and dedication, and needless to day, the continued patronage of their listeners.

“At the end of the day, the best reward is when you see the fruits of your service changing the lives of many,” said Enriquez. “This distinction from BizNewsAsia speaks volumes of the responsibility that we, as media men, have to our fellow Filipinos. They can rest assured that we will continue to do our role in the country’s nation building.”
